Carbon Dioxide, or CO2, fire extinguishers are a common type of fire protection equipment, regularly found in office and commercial situations.

These extinguishers work by displacing oxygen and therefore “suffocating” the fire. They are useful on Class B (flammable liquid) fires, as well as on Class E (electrified equipment). CO2 extinguishers may be used on Class A fires, however their impact will be limited.

Carbon Dioxide cylinders are more expensive than Powder extinguishers, however they do not make the same mess when discharged. In many cases, a CO2 extinguisher is required around electrical equipment.

As a common extinguisher, CO2s are available in a variety of sizes including 2kg, 3.5kg and 5kg.
